To further enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities, Creative Living has developed an assessment program that would provide an overnight independent living experience to post-graduate students (ages 18 to 22). This program is being offered to public and private schools during the 2015/2016 school year. This assessment and planning tool would enhance the learning experience by revealing the areas where these students need the most help in gaining a life of independence.

"Since our focus is on independent living skills training we thought it would be a great service to offer such a 'real-life' assessment at the Creative Living home," said Board President Lucille Giannone.  "Through our successful partnership with Andover Public School's Transition Opportunities Programs we've had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the students so they feel more comfortable envisioning a life of independence. We're excited about offering this new program as we approach our 30th year as a vital community organization."

The post-graduate students would be transported by the school to and from the Creative Living location/home (368 South Main Street, Andover, Mass.) with a 3pm drop off and 1pm pick up during the school week, beginning either on a Monday or Wednesday afternoon. Each overnight would be single sex with a maximum of 5 students.

The Creative Living staff would conduct individualized "daily living" assessments focusing on:

  • independence;
  • self-advocacy;
  • home-living skills (meal planning/prep, laundry, bed making, personal hygiene, phone skills, money, safety);
  • and social skills.

This experiential-enhanced learning opportunity would give each young adult an opportunity to practice his/her social and independent livings skills outside of their home and school environment.

The daily living assessments would be conducted by a 2-person overnight staff (medication certified/first aid/CPR trained) in a real-life independent home experience. The assessment information would be obtained in a natural home-like environment. To help schools create results-oriented data, we would offer pre and post assessments(Fall 2015 and Spring 2016). Creative Living would then produce "individualized" assessment reports based on a competency and functional rating system.
